MRI – 4 Part Series: Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Brain & Extremities Basics for the Chiropractic Office (Bagnell, Online 2026)
Overview
This seminar provides foundational MRI interpretation skills for Doctors of Chiropractic. Participants review spinal and brain MRI anatomy, pathological findings, and red flags relevant to chiropractic clinical decision-making. Emphasis is placed on differentiating disc pathology, identifying fractures, recognizing neurological compromise, and determining when to treat, modify care, or refer.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the seminar, participants will have a knowledge of:
- Differentiate disc bulge, protrusion, extrusion, and sequestration.
- Identify vertebral compression fractures and marrow edema patterns.
- Interpret nerve root compression findings.
- Recognize brain MRI abnormalities requiring referral.
- Determine chiropractic contraindications based on imaging.

Hour 1: MRI Cervical Spine

T1/T2/STIR sequences. Cervical anatomy (C1–C7, uncovertebral joints). Disc pathology differentiation. Central canal stenosis. Cord compression and myelomalacia recognition. C5–C6 radiculopathy case review.
Hour 2: MRI Thoracic Spine

Thoracic vertebrae and rib articulations. Wedge vs burst fractures. STIR marrow edema interpretation. Acute vs chronic differentiation. Osteoporotic fracture case study.
Hour 3: MRI Lumbar Spine

Lumbar anatomy L1–S1. L4-L5/L5-S1 disc pathology. Nerve root compression patterns. Spondylolisthesis grading. Cauda equina red flags.
Hour 4: MRI Brain & Extremities

Brain anatomy overview. White matter hyperintensities. Chiari malformation basics. Rotator cuff tear MRI basics. Meniscal tear recognition. Referral guidelines.
![]() | LAWRENCE BAGNELL, DC Dr. Bagnell is a Doctor of Chiropractic and CEO of Bagnell Chiropractic Life Centre in Pennsylvania, where he has been in practice since 1991. He specializes in pregnancy and pediatric chiropractic care, headache origins, TMJ-related conditions, vagus nerve stimulation, and MRI interpretation for chiropractors. A long-time educator and continuing education instructor, he develops and teaches CE programs through multiple national platforms and professional associations. Dr. Bagnell is the author of several publications on breech presentation and pregnancy care, including the Bagnell Technique series, and his recent book Nothing Happens Until You Move (2026). He has lectured at Life University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and has been featured as a speaker at professional conferences and on national media. He is an active member and former co-president of the Pregnancy and Pediatric Group of the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association. |
