Concepts in Chiropractic and Immunology (Murphy, July 10 & 11, 2021 Webinar)
LIVE WEBINAR ONLY
Live webinar now satisfies California Board requirements for live CE. See DCA Waiver DCA-20-63 for regulatory details.
SUMMARY
We all know chiropractic is good for immunity. But how confidently can you answer your patient's questions of "why?" and "how?" and "how much?" In this seminar Dr. Murphy will guide you through the details of immunology, neuroanatomy, and the chiropractic adjustment. He'll present the historical context and bring you right up to the minute with the latest peer-reviewed literature from a number of disciplines. Be armed with deep knowledge of chiropractic and immunity and see your practice thrive!
SCHEDULE
Saturday 12:00 - 8:00pm
Sunday, 8:00am - 12:00pm
(both sessions required)
ON-CAMPUS OPTION
This seminar will be offered via live webinar only.
Hour 1 – TECHNIQUE
The early years: 1918 – 1921
•The Early Evidence of Mechano-Immunological Influences: anecdote and science review.
•A look at the publications of the era in chiropractic and osteopathic literature.
• Reviewing the early published evidence linking spinal biomechanical function to sympathetic nervous system control of blood supply and to visceral parenchymal physiology.
Hour 2 - TECHNIQUE
The middle years, the 1970s: progressing science
Reviewing the continuing published evidence linking spinal biomechanical function to sympathetic nervous system control of blood supply and to visceral parenchymal physiology. These years relied on improved understanding of physiology, proprioception, and technology such as electrical skin resistance.
Hour 3 – BASIC SCIENCES
Immunology Overview
•Understanding the innate immune system
•Understanding the adaptive immune response
Hour 4 - TECHNIQUE
Chiropractic adjustment, subluxation patho-anatomy
•Discuss the integrated physiology between chiropractic adjusting and inflammation, fibrosis, & the Gate Theory.
•Influence of spinal adjusting on clinical neuroanatomy of chronic spine pain, including: receptors, synapses, cord pathways, brain representation.
•Distinguish between the clinical management of compressive neuropathology v. supersensitivity nerve interference.
Hour 5 – BASIC SCIENCES
Immuno-Sympathetic Interactions
•Learn how the innate immune response is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system
Hour 6 - TECHNIQUE
Mechano-Sympathetic Interactions
•Review the modern evidence linking spinal biomechanical function and the spinal adjustment to sympathetic nervous system.
•The modern technology includes levels of salivary amylase, radioactive glucose, PET scans, sensory evoked potentials, etc.
Hour 7 – BASIC SCIENCES
Immuno-Parasympathetic Interactions
•Review cytokine influence on the vagus nerve
Hour 8 - TECHNIQUE
Chiropractic Adjustment and Mechano-Parasympathetic Interactions
•Review how cervical spine mechanics, as actualized through chiropractic adjusting, influences the parasympathetic nervous system
Hour 9 – BASIC SCIENCES
Cellular immuno-physiology
• Integrate chiropractic adjustment, blood flow, cellular fermentation, cellular respiration, melatonin, and the cytokine storm.
Hour 10 – BASIC SCIENCES
Review of the pertinent literature
•Review the peer-reviewed literature supporting the models covered in class.
Hour 11 – ETHICS & LAW
Discuss the concepts of standard of care and causation as related to chiropractic clinical practice.
Hour 12 – ETHICS & LAW
Review national and state level publications pertaining to:
•Medical Negligence/Malpractice
•Standard of Care for Health Care Professionals
•Success Not Required
•Duty to Refer to a Specialist
•Abandonment of Patient
•Informed Consent
