Whiplash Overview (Murphy, July 12-13, 2025 Nebraska Campus)
Overview
The most important consideration for the understanding of the consequences of cervical spine traumatic injury caused by motor vehicle collisions (WHIPLASH-TYPE MECHANISMS) is the unique anatomy of the cervical spine. This includes the uncinated processes, the upper cervical spine complex, the vascular system, and the brain.
The secondary important consideration is the understanding of the basic laws of physics, including inertia, mass, speed, velocity, acceleration, etc. These concepts should be coupled with:
• Vehicle variables, such as size, road conditions, directions of impact, head restraints, seat belts, bumper characteristics, etc.
• Patient variables, such as awareness, head position, age, degenerative joint disease, central canal stenosis, etc.
Lastly, the established steps in the healing of injured soft tissues and how they are influenced by various types of chiropractic care interventions should be understood.
These concepts, and more, are integrated into this class presentation.
