Learning Objectives
- Understand neurology and physiology of subluxation and pain perception
- Identify and manage subluxation by applying neurological principles
Day 1
8 – 9 am: Ethics & Law | • Medical Negligence • Standard of Care for Health Care Professionals • Duty to Refer to a Specialist • Abandonment of Patient • Medical Malpractice • Informed Consent |
9 – 10 am: Ethics & Law | • The Practice of Chiropractic • Use of Lasers • Advertisements • Chiropractic Specialties • Illegal Practice • Conduct on Premises • Unprofessional Conduct • Patients Records and Billings • Informed Consent |
10 – 11 am: Technique | Learn the neurology of pain perception. Learn three types of pain and their clinical differences in terms of chiropractic management. Discuss the integrated physiology between inflammation, fibrosis, the Gate Theory, and chiropractic adjusting. Discuss and demonstrate appropriate chiropractic technique applicable to inflammation and |
11 – 12 pm: Technique | Distinguish between the clinical management of compressive neuropathology v. supersensitivity nerve interference. Discuss and demonstrate appropriate chiropractic technique applicable to these cases (majority of hour). |
1 – 2 pm: Technique | Complete an interactive clinical neuroanatomy of chronic spine pain, including: receptors, synapses, cord pathways, brain representation, and how they are influenced by spinal adjusting. |
2 – 3 pm: Technique | Complete an interactive exercise of spinal mechanoreceptor driven vestibular nuclei controls of somatic function and visceral function. Discuss and demonstrate appropriate chiropractic technique applicable to spine and extremity pain, including upper cervical adjusting (majority of hour). |
3 – 4 pm: Basic Science | Complete an upper cervical - trigeminal cervical nucleus integrative model for chiropractic spinal adjusting. |
4 – 5 pm: Basic Science | Integrate the clinical relationships between chronic spine pain and spinal mechanoreception, including: constant v. non-constant thalamic summation/integration; ascending inhibitory principles; descending inhibitory principles; immune system function. |
Day 2
8 – 9 am: Basic Science | Discuss the clinical relevance of receptor driven neuroplasticity, synaptogenesis, and transneural degeneration.Discuss the concept of spinal mechanoreceptor driven hypothalamic controls of visceral function. |
9 – 10 am: Basic Science | Discuss the relationship between mechanoreceptors, the sympathetic nervous system, and neuroimmunology. |
10 – 11 am: Basic Science | Discuss the relationships between the nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve. |
11 – 12 pm: Basic Science | Review the peer-reviewed literature supporting the models covered in class. |

He received his Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics in 1986. Since 1982, Dr. Murphy has served as part-time undergraduate faculty at Life Chiropractic College West, where he is currently teaching classes to seniors in the Management of Spinal Disorders. |
