Overview
It is claimed that the current opiate drug crisis and its consequence are the biggest healthcare disaster in modern history. This class will define the opiate crisis and explore alternatives, including chiropractic adjusting.

Hour 1:
Review the history of opium, opiate pharmacology, and opioid synthetics.
Hour 2:
Quantify the current American opioid crisis.
Hour 3:
Review the history of how the modern opiate crisis became established in modern American healthcare.
Hour 4:
Learn about the discovery of the opiate receptor and its influence on pain perception.
Hour 5:
Learn the suprasegmental descending pain inhibitory control system for pain management.
Hour 6:
Learn about the rapid adaptation of the opiate receptor to pharmacological products.
FOUR HOURS TECHNIQUE
Hour 1:
Review the basic neurophysiology of the chiropractic adjustment.
Hour 2:
Learn the neurophysiology of the chiropractic adjustment-driven suprasegmental activation of the descending pain inhibitory control system.
Hour 3:
Review studies pertaining to the chiropractic management of chronic pain syndromes.
Hour 4:
Review the connection between the microbiome, the chiropractic adjustment
TWO HOURS ETHICS-LAW
Hour 1:
Discuss the concepts of standard of care and causation as related to chiropractic clinical practice.
Hour 2:
Review the State of California publications pertaining to:
• Medical Negligence/Malpractice
• Standard of Care for Health Care Professionals
• Success Not Required
• Duty to Refer to a Specialist
• Abandonment of Patient
• Informed Consent

Dr. Dan Murphy graduated magna cum laude from Western States Chiropractic College in 1978, and has more than 36 years of practice experience. He received his Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics in 1986. Since 1982, Dr. Murphy has served as part-time undergraduate faculty at Life Chiropractic College West, where he is currently teaching classes to seniors in the Management of Spinal Disorders.

Changes and Refunds
Every attempt is made to offer Life West CE programs as announced. However, Life West reserves the right to adjust program faculty, locations, dates, times and tuition to accommodate unanticipated occurrences and to cancel programs owing to insufficient enrollment, illness, or other factors. Life West will notify advance registrants of any cancellation or significant program changes. Life West is not responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to adjustments or cancellations.
Refunds for program registration are granted if requested in writing no later than one business day before program begins. If registrants cancel within one week of program start date, a $50 processing fee will be deducted from refunds.
Less than one business day before the program begins, registration is nonrefundable but a credit voucher may be issued. Vouchers must be requested within sixty days of the program. The credit voucher may be applied towards another Life West Postgraduate & Continuing Education program and must be redeemed within one year of the original scheduled program date or it will be forfeited. A $25 processing fee will be deducted from vouchers.
