Understanding Whiplash: Unraveling the Impact of Auto Accidents Part 2 (Murphy, Jul 13-14, 2024 live-streamed)
Summary
It is often assumed that whiplash-mechanism injury only affects the cervical spine. Yet, many patients will also experience inertial injuries to their brain and/or compression injuries to their low back.
Consequently, understanding the clinical presentation for both traumatic brain injury and low back injury from motor vehicle collisions is important. As a consequence, examination, imaging, treatment, and prognostic factors should be discussed.
Also, whiplash-injury studies define prognostic factors, such as central canal stenosis and cross-sectional tissue diameters. The chiropractic clinician should be aware of these influences, how to examine for them, and how to modify treatment as a consequence of their presence.
The chiropractor should not only be familiar with these concepts, but should be able to effectively communicate them in reports and testimony of as to do so.
Objectives
• Understanding how the low back can be injured in a motor vehicle collision.
• Understand how the brain is injured in a motor vehicle collision, including when the head has suffered no direct impact.
• Understand the influence of pre-injury central canal stenosis of whiplash injury.
• Understand the influence of pre-injury central canal stenosis of whiplash injury.
For each of these, the attending chiropractor should understand presentation features, examination findings, imaging findings, and treatment options for the patient.

Hour#1: Low Back and Leg Pain Following Whiplash Injury
Point out the probable mechanisms for direct injury to the lower back during motor vehicle collisions.
Distinguish between radiculopathy, neuropathy, and sclerogenic referral of extremity pain.
Hour#2: Central Canal Stenosis
Define the parameters for cervical and lumber spine central canal stenosis.
Utilize both the Torg/Pavlov and the ratio radiographic methods for assessing cervical spine central canal stenosis.
Explain the critical relationship between central canal stenosis and hyperextension spinal injuries.
Demonstrate a practical method for the clinical assessment of cervical spine central canal stenosis.
Hour#3: Whiplash Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury
Explain the differences between a blow brain injury and an inertial brain injury.
Define the pathoanatomic and patho-biochemistry of traumatic brain injury.
Justify clinical interventions that have a positive therapeutic influence on traumatic brain injury.
Hour#4: Cervical Disc Herniation
Point out the anatomical differences between lumbar and cervical discs.
Explore the pathoanatomical and therapeutic differences between lumbar and cervical discs lesions.
Hour#5: Examinations and Evaluations
Explain the minimum examinations that should be performed.
Explain the minimum requirements for charting the daily patient contact.
Hour#6: Women v. Men in Collisions
Learn the concept of cross-sectional soft tissue diameter of injury and traumatic injury.
Learn the concept of head circumference relative to neck circumference in traumatic injury.
Hour#7: Reports
Make recommendations for re-evaluations.
Make recommendations for interim reports contents.
Explore common academic terminology and concepts in effective report writing.
Hour#8: Testimony
Distinguish between a percipient witness and an expert witness.
Explain what a subpoena is and what it means to the treating chiropractor.
Explain what a deposition is for the treating chiropractor. Summarize the basic rules of a treating expert deposition.
Summarize the mechanics of a personal injury trial from the perspective of the treating chiropractor.
Hour#9: Testimony Applications
Demonstrate a typical soft tissue direct examination.
Show the two most common drawings to support chiropractic care for soft tissue injuries.
Hour#10: Management of Difficult Cases
Discuss the concept of how the systemic inflammatory profile affects local injury.
List 8 systemic inflammatory factors that should be considered and co-managed on whiplash-injured patients
TWO HOURS ETHICS-LAW
Hour 1:
Discuss the concepts of standard of care and causation as related to chiropractic clinical practice.
Hour 2:
Review the State of California publications pertaining to:
• Medical Negligence/Malpractice
• Standard of Care for Health Care Professionals
• Success Not Required
• Duty to Refer to a Specialist
• Abandonment of Patient
• Informed Consent

He received his Diplomate in Chiropractic Orthopedics in 1986. Since 1982, Dr. Murphy has served as part-time undergraduate faculty at Life Chiropractic College West, where he is currently teaching classes to seniors in the Management of Spinal Disorders. |

Price
Changes and Refunds
Every attempt is made to offer Life West CE programs as announced. However, Life West reserves the right to adjust program faculty, locations, dates, times and tuition to accommodate unanticipated occurrences and to cancel programs owing to insufficient enrollment, illness, or other factors. Life West will notify advance registrants of any cancellation or significant program changes. Life West is not responsible for any expenses incurred by registrants due to adjustments or cancellations.
Refunds for program registration are granted if requested in writing no later than one business day before program begins. If registrants cancel within one week of program start date, a $50 processing fee will be deducted from refunds.
Less than one business day before the program begins, registration is nonrefundable but a credit voucher may be issued. Vouchers must be requested within sixty days of the program. The credit voucher may be applied towards another Life West Postgraduate & Continuing Education program and must be redeemed within one year of the original scheduled program date or it will be forfeited. A $25 processing fee will be deducted from vouchers.
