Ethical Cross-Cultural Communication and Chiropractic: Affecting Patient Outcomes (Bielser, Online 2024)
Overview
Understanding how to effectively communicate cross-culturally is an ethical issue, and it is more important today than ever before. Misunderstandings often arise when speakers of different cultural backgrounds, or indeed speakers of the same language communicate.
The course seeks to explore the ethics and practicalities of cross cultural communication. It will help you in understanding how you perceive various cultures, identifying communication barriers, aligning your style to others, reviewing principles of ethical and effective communication, and improving cross cultural communication for better health outcomes.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the sessions, participants will be better able to:
Objective 1- Understand how ethics plays an importance roll in cross cultural communication and chiropractic
Objective 2 – Learn and understand what cross cultural communication is and how to identify communication barriers
Objective 3- Learn how to communicate effectively across cultural differences by aligning styles and learning about different communication model tools

HOUR 1
Review the demographic, gender and language data within the chiropractic industry, the U.S. and at Life West for comparison purposes and identifying gaps. This includes the top 5 languages spoken in the U.S. as well as reviewing the landscape within the ethics issue.
Defining Cross Cultural Communication, including culture, cultural competence and verbal vs. nonverbal communication and why it matters in the ethical application of care in the chiropractic industry. Identifying barriers and consequences to successful cross cultural communication. Learning these skills ensures the DC can ethically provide care as it improves quality of care and patient safety.
Review two best practices and close with a reflective exercise.
HOUR 2
Discuss how to align varying communication styles such as direct versus indirect, the use of hand gestures, time, and personal space which we all use to communicate. We’ll walk through the Principles of Effective Communication, a ten step process of guiding cross cultural communication. Review different Communication Models showcasing how different industries navigate cross cultural communication.
Review two best practices and close with a final reflexive exercise.
