AMTI (Advances in the Management of Traumatic Injuries) 150-Hour Certificate  program offered by the ICA's Council on Applied Science. A program on trauma care for advanced chiropractors to hone and enhance the doctor's skill set or to help a doctor new to Personal Injury care  create a bulletproof practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 12-hour session of the AMTI Certificate Program, participants will be able to:

1. Conduct comprehensive trauma-specific history taking and physical examinations to accurately document mechanisms of injury, patient complaints, and clinical findings for Personal Injury (PI) cases.

2. Utilize and interpret appropriate intake and outcomes assessment tools (e.g., Pain Disability Questionnaire, Rivermead, ADL assessments) to monitor patient progress and support medico-legal documentation.

3. Develop thorough and defensible documentation including SOAP notes, prior records, and PI-specific forms that support clinical reasoning and withstand legal scrutiny.

4. Understand the biomechanics of various collision types (rear-end, front-end, broadside, rotational, and multiple impacts) and their correlation with common injury patterns, including spinal and brain injuries.

5. Identify and accurately diagnose commonly missed injuries in both the spine and extremities to ensure complete patient care and case documentation.

6. Perform detailed and legally sound physical examinations, including ROM and muscle testing, and understand the importance of proper technique and thoroughness in PI cases.

7. Select and refer appropriate diagnostic imaging studies (e.g., plain film, DMX, MRI, brain scans) to aid in diagnosis and case management, including the use of specialized imaging such as upright MRI or flexion-extension views.

8. Manage PI cases effectively, including inter-professional communication, legal documentation, referrals, impairment ratings using AMA Guides, and education of patients and attorneys on clinical findings.

• SOAP notes; writing the story that may not be read for two years, because if  it is not written down, it did not happen

• Physics of a Crash 
• Rear-end collisions 
• Front end collisions 
Topic/Category: History Taking and Physical Examination Procedures (1 hour CE) 
 
2:00 – 3:00 PM Mechanism of Injury, (Dr. Gallagher, Dr. Betz, and Dr.):
• Broadside collisions 
• Rotation motion and how it adds to the risk of injury, especially with concussion/TBI 
• Multiple impacts

3:00 – 4:00 PM Diagnosing ALL the injuries, (Dr. Gallagher and Dr. Hirsh): knowing what  can be injured is essential to finding what has actually been injured 
• Commonly missed spinal injuries 
• Commonly missed extremity injuries

4-5 PM Physical exam (Dr. Gallagher and Dr. Betz): do it right or you have done it  wrong 
• Any test you do not perform will be a negative test 
• Any test you perform incorrectly may also be a negative test 
• ROM: active and passive 
• Muscle testing performed correctly: Warmup prior to testing & 3x or 3 second

8-9 AM Radiology (Dr. Gallagher, Dr. Betz, and Dr. Hirsh): what are the most important tests to perform or refer to? Which radiographic studies should you be taking or requesting  and what they can rule out or in to help formulate your diagnosis 
• Plain film studies & DMX; Digital Motion X-rays 
Topic/Category: Diagnostic testing procedures and differential diagnosis (1 hour CE) 
9:00-10:00 AM Radiology II (Dr. Gallagher, Dr. Betz, and Dr. Hirsh): what are the most important  tests to refer? Which radiographic studies should you request and what can they rule out  or in to help formulate your diagnosis 
• MRI including upright MRI, MRI flexion and extension studies and upper cervical MRI 
• Brain scans

10:00-11:00 AM Concussion/TBI (Dr. Gallagher and Dr. Betz): It is not possible to introduce enough  force to damage structures in the cervical spine without bouncing the brain inside the  cranium. If you have diagnosed a cervical injury and have not diagnosed a concussion, you have not done an exam 
• CDC position on concussion 
• The myth of Loss of Consciousness 
• Chiari Malformations 
• Concussion or upper cervical instability- to distinguish which is the injury or is it both? 
Cranial Nerve Exam: there is a reason you were taught this in school, and it was not just  to create multiple-choice questions for the finals. Why “Cranial Nerves II – XII grossly  intact” is a gross exaggeration that can damage a case 
• Injuries to cranial nerves
