Utilization of the Pupillary Light Reflex as a Chiropractic assessment instrument (John McClaren, DC)

Bellevue, NE US
May 11, 2024

This course will consist of 4 hours of continuing education for the Doctor of Chiropractic, utilizing  concepts of Clinical Neuroscience as applied to the Neurological Examination, as well as  establishing parameters for baseline, pre-treatment, and post-treatment in clinical practice. The  course provides a clinical review of the pupillary light reflex (PRL) as used within a clinical setting  as an outcome measure, with review of clinically relevant neuroanatomy, contemporary research, and clinical application. The learner will also be instructed on the utilization of a smartphone-based application in order to assess and provide readings for the PLR, along with  using these findings in a manner that allows clinical interpretation and understanding for use.

Learning Objectives

Objectives for the seminar include:

  1. Allowing the participant to improve their knowledge base in the autonomic nervous system via understanding the neurological substrate of the PLR
  2. Allowing the participant a working knowledge and understanding of how to use and apply a smartphone based application to measure the PLR
  3. Allowing the participant to establish a working ability to interpret findings of the PLR measurement in a fashion to improve clinical understanding and patient outcomes

Hour 1
Instructed by John McClaren on Neurology

The first hour of the course will initiate the PowerPoint presentation reviewing the relevant neuroanatomy of the PLR, discussing concepts from the standpoint of neurological structures that are relevant to the contemporary clinical examination in a variety of conditions that commonly present to the general practice of Chiropractic

Hour 2
Instructed by John McClaren on Neurology

The PowerPoint presentation will continue, furthering the concept of neuroanatomical discussion by utilizing contemporary clinical research. Discussion of the utility of the PLR for the general practice of Chiropractic and it relates to contemporary clinical presentations, topics, and patient care will be discussed.

Hour 3
Instructed by John McClaren on Neurology

This time will consist of instruction and hands-on utilization of the smartphone based application specific to measuring the PLR, as well as furthering the conceptualization of interpretation of test results, as well as solidifying concepts on how the PLR can enhance the practice of Chiropractic

Hour 4
Instructed by John McClaren on Neurology

The last hour of the seminar will include real-life case studies demonstrating the clinical utilization of the application of analysis of the PLR, more in-house applications of the PLR, and a question and answer session that will further the knowledge of the participant.
